This route runs through areas which, in the Middle Ages, were incorporated into the Kingdom of Aragon thanks to the work of different Military Orders. The deep historical legacy is one of the elements contributing to its cultural identity and what will best help you uncover this standout
The route includes the following Paradores:
Benicarlo: First day
Maestrazgo county has a bright coastline where the inland mountains and sierras melt away. Benicarló is a good starting point to explore this pleasant coastline with nearby places such as Peñíscola, where the Papa Luna Castle towers over the town and appears to float over the sea and part of the old town. Heading inland, a visit to the area of Els Ports-Maestrat is worthwhile with the beautiful town of Morella a highlight; several civic and religious monuments reflect the town's history.
Visitors may also spend a couple of relaxing days at the Parador learning how to play golf in the pitch and putt facility.
Alcaniz: Second day
The knight commanders of the Order of Calatrava resided for several centuries in their castle in the Lower Aragon region, a structure perched on a hill overlooking the city and which today houses the Parador of Alcañiz.
The Renaissance town hall and the Gothic exchange stand out in town. Alcañiz is a good starting point to explore the nearby Maestrazgo with its hill country housing mountain landscapes and beautiful towns such as Mosquerueal, La Iglesuela del Cid, Cantavieja and Mirambel.
The Teruel Maestrazgo is made up of a wide selection of landscapes, with the River Guadalope and tributaries serving as a backbone, and the series of sierras, ravines, plains, moorland and leafy forests.
Teruel: Third day
Teruel is a Mudéjar city, housing a beautiful cultural and monumental heritage that has survived over centuries. It is also the city of the Lovers of Teruel. Mudéjar Teruel benefits from the Islamic-Aragon tradition with the Cathedral tower, San Pedro tower, San Martín tower, San Salvador tower and La Merced tower standing out.
The beautiful roof of the stunningly harmonious cathedral is a must-see. It is for this reason that Mudéjar Teruel - a mirror on to Hispanic Mudéjar - has been rightly recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
