The Route of the Almoravids and the Almohads

Legacy Routes through other cultures | 7 nights

A Route through the heart of ancient Al-Andalus with nooks sheltering the living mark of the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties.

The route includes the following Paradores:

Arcos de la Frontera: First day

Sitting atop a spectacular sliced rock, Arcos de la Frontera is a picturesque Cadiz town filled with places recalling its Moorish heritage. Towers, churches and splendid vantage points with views over the River Guadalete are just a few of the many attractions available in the area, part of the White Villages Route and near Los Alcomocales Nature Reserve.

Ronda: Second and third days

An immensely beautiful town. Its Moorish heritage may be seen in every street as Izn-Rand Onda - its name at the time meaning "City of the Castle" - was one of Moorish Spain's capitals and houses monuments such as the Arab Baths, the Old Bridge, the House of the Giant and Mondragón House. There is another side of Ronda with its Bullring and New Bridge.

Antequera: Fourth and fifth days

One of the most important monuments is the Dolmens of Menga, Viera and El Romeral, dating back to the Bronze Age. Strolling around Antequera's historic quarter is like travelling back in time. One interesting option is to visit the churches of San Juan Bautista and San Sebastián among others, or discover the Moorish Alcazaba fortress. Other important monuments include the Temple of Papabellotas Castle and the 17th and 18th century mansions. They are all characterised by their impressive Spanish baroque style architecture. In the centre of Antequera, you can discover the Royal Collegiate Church of San Sebastián, which dates from the 16th Century. And don't miss the Convent of the Incarnation, followed by a visit to the Plaza del Coso Viejo, a beautiful bullring close to the Convent.

Málaga Golf: Sixth and seventh days

Malaga was a Moorish city and the Alcazaba Citadel or Royal Palace is a beautiful example of this heritage. It was the palace of the Nasrid Monarchs, with construction beginning in the 11th century. Today it is the home of the Provincial Archaeology Museum. Other areas of interest include the Cathedral, the Cathedral Museum and the Virgin of Victory Shrine. The Museum of Fine Art and the recently opened Picasso Museum make for interesting excursions.
